1. Sell yourself with a great LinkedIn headline

A clear photo with a smile wins every time and gives potential employers a warm and positive first impression. Did you know that LinkedIn profiles with colour photos clearly showing your face receive over 20 times more profile views and nine times more connection requests? A clear image will make it easier for someone to identify your profile after meeting you in person.

2. Tell your story

The summary section is your place to tell your story and add personality to your profile. While the rest of your profile can list the dates and facts, the summary gives you a chance to speak directly to your followers and demonstrate how the skills you’ve gained have contributed to your career progression. And it can provide insight into the person behind the employee.

3. Use a customised profile URL

Did you know that you can edit your LinkedIn profile URL? By default, your profile URL is usually your first and last name, traditionally followed by a sequence of alphanumeric characters, and it doesn’t exactly jump off the page. Change the URL to read your first and last name, e.g., linkedin.com/yourname, for a more concise and memorable link.

4. Write LinkedIn articles for a newsletter

If you have more than 150 connections, an even better option is to start a LinkedIn newsletter as a home for your articles. To do so, ensure you are in Creator Mode and then choose “Create a Newsletter”. Any articles you write will live on your newsletter page, be displayed on your profile, and be shared with your connections and followers in their news feed.

5. Display your love of learning

If you’ve been learning a new skill, share it with pride on your profile. After completing a LinkedIn Learning course, you can post the course certificate in your profile’s Licenses & Certifications section. You can also share the results of any skills assessments you take. Passing a skills assessment can increase your chances of getting noticed by recruiters – people with verified skills are 30% more likely to be hired.

6. Share your LinkedIn recommendations

How powerful is it when someone sings your praises, giving future employers an insight into how professional and experienced you are? LinkedIn Recommendations helps you do just that. To start requesting recommendations, head to View Profile, scroll to the Recommendations section and click ‘Ask for a recommendation.’ Be mindful about which offers to appear on your page; the user can click on the post to learn more about your connection and their professional credentials.

8. Include your Top Skills

Showing off your top skills provides a powerful overview of what you offer to potential employers. Highlighting skills can set you apart from other candidates. Think carefully about the in-demand skills for your job industry and list the ones you have, along with any skills that give you a competitive edge. Your connections can also endorse you for your skills, which adds credibility.

9. Follow and share relevant LinkedIn content

Following community organisations or industry groups can add a professional touch to your profile. Take an active role on the network by commenting on relevant industry posts and sharing the content with your followers. You can share your professional opinions, goals, and values by participating in the online community.

10. Add your educational background and awards

Finally, remember to include your educational background and any honours and awards you’ve received - you can even mention relevant volunteer experience or languages you’re fluent in. These accomplishments can differentiate your profile from candidates with similar work experience and job skills.
