    Roles at Southern Water

    Process Technician

    Our Process Technicians take care of the day-to-day maintenance of, and repairs to, water and wastewater treatment works, sludge treatment centres and pumping stations.

    Accountabilities

    • To undertake reactive and planned maintenance of plant and equipment on a daily basis.
    • To coach, train and develop staff under their supervision, this to include the apprenticeship programme.
    • To install new plant and equipment as required.
    • Provide technical expertise to Internal & External contractors.
    • Manage projects internally and provide the technical expertise to contractors working for Southern Water.
    • To respond to alarms and fault find to identify issues, fix these or escalate if required.

    Knowledge

    • Able to understand and/or use standard equipment and tools required of speciality and manufacture simple parts (welding, etc)
    • Understands operational processes and impacts
    • Can read and understand technical Mechanical or Electrical drawings
    • Able to self teach due to experience/expertise
    • Understands Southern Water operations
    • Aware of new products

    Skills and Competences

    • Good written and verbal communication
    • Able to work effectively under pressure
    • Good collaborative and influencing skills
    • Adaptable/flexible and self motivated
    • Supervisory experience helpful
    • Able to mentor and provide feedback

    Experience and Qualifications

    • Knowledge or experience of speciality area (electrics/mechanics/both) and heavy industry
    • Has completed a recognised apprenticeship in an industrial area
    • ONC or equivalent in speciality area
    • Current Electrical Installation Regulations qualification (electrical/multi skilled)

    Water Network Inspector

    Our Water Network Inspectors are the customer facing team in Southern Water. There will not be many roles you see where you can significantly impact the satisfaction of customers. Every day is different, you will be working in all conditions across the network resolving a range of customer related incidents and ensuring that our customers receive a continuous supply of fresh water.

    Accountabilities

    Some of the responsibilities that you will carry out will include but are not limited to:

    • Providing a courteous and efficient service to all customers.
    • Planning, organising and executing shutdowns to the distribution system so that disruption to the customer is minimised and where possible the supply is maintained.
    • Ensure that the procedures for the protection of water quality during main repairs are always adhered to.
    • Responsible as 1st point of contact during emergencies both in and out of hours; determine course of action to be taken escalating where necessary.
    • Provide and manage alternative water supplies in the event of interruptions to supply or during an emergency (which shall include bottled water and standpipes etc).

    You may also gain indirect knowledge in mechanical and electrical specialisms and this could prove to be a future field of study with the skills you will gain. Southern Water can support this ambition with upskilling apprenticeships and other training.

    Although work is generated to you on a weekly basis, you will be managing your own time, giving you the freedom and flexibility to design your own working week, you will learn how to be organised and proactive.

    Flows and Pressure

    • Ensure that guaranteed Standards pertaining to DG2 are achieved and maintained and that the procedures in place are strictly adhered to at all times.
    • Identify and promote Renewal and Improvement schemes to ensure continued integrity of the distribution system.

    Leakage

    • Issue Waste Notices and complete customer leak reports so that the volume of wasted water may be recorded and minimised.
    • Carry out flood and damage investigations and report promptly at the end of the incident.
    • Rechargeable Works and Damage to be reported promptly to enable recharging of associated costs to be made.

    Infrastructure

    • Ensure that all changes to the Network are recorded and passed to the relevant system owners for update (i.e. GIS, MGIS etc), to ensure that details shown on all systems are current.
    • Investigate and identify the need for any remedial works, including the raising of jobs where necessary.
    • Liase with other Utilities, HMUs and other 3rd parties regarding the position and condition of SWS apparatus in order to safeguard the integrity of the distribution network. Trace and mark the location of SWS apparatus where requested to do so.

    General

    • To ensure that guaranteed standards pertaining to written appointments and complaints are achieved and maintained and that procedures in place are strictly adhered to.
    • Ensure correct priority is given to all Water Quality complaints.
    • Carry out Customer requests to turn off and turn on water supplies.
    • Carry out basic investigations and repairs (only where practicably) within customer properties.
